MEL Frequently Asked Questions

Postdoctoral Questions:

Q) What is the required experience necessary for a postdoctoral student?
A) You should have experience in computational chemistry, molecular modeling, QSAR, statistics, and Linux. If you are a synthetic organic chemist, or natural products chemist, and don't have the above computational chemistry experience, this is not the lab for you.

Network Questions:

Q) How do I change my Linux cluster password?
A) By typing yppasswd at the command line.

Q) How do I use the zip drive on Simon with Linux?
A) Forthcoming.

Q) How do I set up mail forwarding on the Linux machines?
A) Create a ".forward" file in your home directory. This is done by first typing "touch .forward" and then using your favorite text editor to write the name of the email address to forward mail to.

Q) How does the file system work in the MEL group?
A) All home directories are exported from Melix to the computer you are logged into (the local machine). So, no matter what computer you log into, you will always have the same home directory. The research directory is a different story. The system administrator will choose one of the Linux machines to house your research directory (probably the computer you sit at). Again, it does not matter which computer you log into, you will always have access to your research directory.

Coursework Questions:

Q) What courses should I take as a graduate student in the Molecular Engineering Lab?
A) First, follow the organic or biochemistry track. Second, if you do not have prior programming experience, take cmps012a and cmps012b. Some good elective class choices are chem200a, cmps101 chem265, cmps243, cmps242, cmps244, cmps160 to name a few.

Q) What courses should I take if I am an undergraduate student in the Molecular Engineering Lab?
A) Your normal core curriculum chemistry classes. For this group, you may want to seriously consider taking cmps012a and cmps012b which are basic programming classes. Also, if interested, see the list of elective classes recommended for graduate students.
